Tuesday, January 22nd
7:00 pm
Chancery Court Building
Guest Speaker: Grant Sowell, Tupelo Tea Party
Topic: How can we as TEA Party Oxford become a more effective organization?
The Magnolia Institute of Public Policy is a new non-profit think tank here in Oxford, MS. They are led by Cal Bowen who also serves on our Administrative Committee.
The Magnolia Institute stands for many of the conservative values TEA Party Oxford stands for.
They produce this newsletter for their members regularly to keep them informed of what MS legislators are doing in Jackson and in Washington.
They have agreed to provide a free copy of their 2012 Year in Review report to members of TEA Party Oxford.
Full members of the Magnolia Institute will continue to receive reports like this throughout the year, customized with detailed reports on their particular representatives.
Check it out and go to MagnoliaInstitute.org to learn how you can join the Magnolia Institute and stay informed about legislation in our state and nation.
Dear Congressman Nunnelee,
Members of TEA Party Oxford congratulate you and Senator Wicker on your re-election. We extend good wishes to you and both our Senators during these forthcoming years, so crucially important to our country.
Needless to say, we are disappointed that, by re-electing Mr. Obama, the majority in this country has assured that we will see four more years of negligent leadership. We worry that this will only further exacerbate the transgressions of the last four years, chief among which are:
For sure, Congressman, you understand why we are filled with despair. However, despite our desperate situation, WE WILL NEVER THROW IN THE TOWEL EVEN THOUGH THE CARDS ARE STACKED AGAINST US!!!! Rather than fight back against everything all at once, let us at least begin with economic/budgetary issues.
We stand behind the notion that each person should work and earn one’s own livelihood and that work carries with it great dignity. Many young people in our country work hard and then, after years of struggle, make it to where their incomes rise to $250,000 or more. Their success should be respected–NOT PUNISHED. Taking money from one segment of the population to redistribute elsewhere is an outgrowth of Marxist radical left ideology, not sound economic and fiscal policy.
Therefore, WE STAND FIRMLY AGAINST ANY INCREASE IN TAXES!!!! Please put on your armor against the assault that will surely come from Obama and his forces. They will accuse you, denigrate you, and vilify you. That is their style. Do not cave in. Please be an advocate for our cause and fight whole-heartedly against all tax increases.
Furthermore, WE STAND FIRMLY IN SUPPORT OF DRASTIC SPENDING CUTS!!! It is simple. We all must live on a budget. The federal government does too. Don’t mortgage our children and grandchildren’s future because you lack the courage to stand up to the big spenders in Washington.
These spending cuts must not come at the cost of national security! There are no sacred cows and we must be willing to cut back everywhere, including the Department of Defense. These cuts should be applied towards wasteful projects and international aid. We cannot afford to give money to countries that hate us!
If nothing works, do not cave into the tax and spend policies of Obama; go over the cliff! The cliff was cleverly constructed to strong-arm conservatives into compromising our dearest values. Stand firm! The liberals are betting that we will blink first. If we compromise now, we may avoid a temporary disaster, but we will lose our country!!! What can be worse than losing our freedoms? Obama is determined to shape a new America rather than adhere to the U.S. Constitution he swore to uphold.
You, Congressman Nunnelee, and our two Senators Wicker and Cochran, are our only hope at this very discouraging time in our nation’s history. We are watching your actions during this crucial time and will remember them when we vote again two years from now.
Sincerest good wishes,
TEA Party Oxford

All interested residents of Oxford and Lafayette County are invited to attend the next meeting of TEA Party Oxford at the Chancery Court building at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, January 22.
This coming Monday at 6:00pm at the Beacon we will hold our first monthly meeting since the election. Below are some points we would like to address before this meeting.
1) We deeply regret the poor planning and leadership exhibited at the prior month’s meeting.
2) We are even more profoundly disappointed in the outcome of last week’s election.
3) Now, more than ever, we must come together.
4) Please give us another chance to present a plan for how we can come together to impact our community, our state, and our country.
5) Meet us at The Beacon at 6:00 Monday night. You will not be disappointed again.
“Let it be told to the future world, that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive, that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet and to repulse it.”
Those are the words of Thomas Paine, speaking of the resolve of the soldiers at Valley Forge.
Tonight, it is easy for a conservative to fall into the trap of despair. This most liberal President, a member of the most fiscally irresponsible and overbearing party in the history of our country, has won re-election despite demonstrating an inability to solve the most fundamental problems facing us over the past four years.
We will, in January, retain a divided government which will most certainly remain in gridlock, unable to reach consensus on the important issues which will decide our nation’s fate.
Yes, it’s easy to be discouraged.
In this, another terrible winter in our nation’s history, it will be very tempting to leave your post, and return home to live out your days in the sweet shelter of ignorance. That would certainly be easy.
But now, more than ever, we must remember the sacrifices our preceding generations made to provide us with this great nation and its many liberties.
We must, like those great generations, stand firm in our resolve to fight for liberty, justice, prudence and, above all, our faith, for these are the greatest inheritance we can leave our children.
We must remain respectful of our country and its law, honoring the process by which individuals have released themselves from the rule of despots and dictators through democratic elections.
In all of this, we must place our hope not in the institutions of this world, but in a God whose divine providence has repeatedly delivered this nation from tumultuous moments throughout its history.
We must not abandon our principles now, though many will call for us to compromise to achieve electoral success. After all, if we win election by forfeiting our beliefs, what have we gained?
I will continue to pray for this nation, to fight for its future, and stand for the principles which guide me regardless of the outcome of any election.
I hope that you will join me.
For the sake of our nation, our children, our future… we must persevere.
Obama may have far bigger trouble in Ohio than the national polls are letting on.
Based on this, the prediction can be made that in 2012, Obama will receive 2,215,978 votes and Romney would win 2,829,037 votes if 7.5% of the total votes cast for Republicans were cast in Cuyahoga County. Romney would win 56.1% of Ohio’s vote to Obama’s 43.9%, with a turnout percentage of 64.67%. This analysis includes the assumption that total turnout will be much lower than past Ohio elections, confirming reports that overall enthusiasm is down for this presidential election compared to 2008.
For those keeping score at home, that’s a 12.2% advantage for Romney statewide.
That, along with the Republicans’ early voting advantage in Ohio, should be helping Romney remain as confident as he looked at the debate.
We want to make sure everybody knows everything they need to know about the candidates in the state Supreme Court race. Yes, if you live in Mississippi, you will be voting for state Supreme Court candidates this November too. It may not get the publicity of the Presidential race, but it is a very critical vote.
To make sure that you are prepared to vote in that race, we are going to send questionnaires to the candidates and invite them to come to our October meeting. What questions do you want to ask the Supreme Court candidates. Remember, they cannot comment directly on how they would rule in a specific case. We will use your responses to create our questionnaire. Please submit your questions by this Monday, Sept. 24, so that we can give the candidates plenty of time to provide their responses.
